What does the hartford board of education do?

 

The Hartford Board of Education plays a central role in shaping the educational experience of students in our community. Its responsibilities include:


  • Hiring the Superintendent – overseeing district leadership. 


  • Adopting Policies and Budgets – guiding school district operations and financial planning. 


  • Setting Educational Goals – directing academic priorities and the student experience. 


  • Ensuring Equitable Resource Distribution & Safe School Environments – including staffing, materials, facility maintenance, and student safety. 


  • Providing District-Level Oversight – through a nine-member board of four elected and five appointed individuals, plus two non-voting student members, responsible for district-wide governance.

Candidate Interviews

Meet incumbent candidate, Shontá Browdy, a dedicated Hartford native, mother, and education advocate!

Shontá has served on School Governance Councils, PTOs, and community leadership boards, and she’s committed to ensuring students thrive while families feel empowered in navigating the education system.


Note: All four Hartford Board of Education election candidates were asked to be interviewed, but only two responded.

Meet incumbent candidate, Cristher Estrada-Perez, a passionate community organizer and educator fighting for racial and economic justice in education, student debt cancellation, and equitable opportunities for all students.

Cristher is a Hartford native, first-generation college graduate, and Executive Director of the Student Loan Fund.

Ask yourself the following questions before heading out to vote:

Easily verify your voter registration status by visiting the Connecticut Voter Registration Lookup. Simply enter your name, date of birth, and town of residence to confirm your registration details. 


Connecticut offers multiple ways to register:


  • Online: If you have a Connecticut driver’s license or DMV-issued ID, register online at the CT Online Voter Registration Portal.
     
  • By Mail: Download and complete the National Mail Voter Registration Form and mail it to your local election office.
     
  • In Person: Visit your local election office to register in person.


Remember, the deadline for pre-election voter registration is 18 days before Election Day. However, Connecticut also offers same-day registration on Election Day and during early voting for the general election.
